Brothers, on a job site visit yesterday 05-15-12 to the U. S. Federal Courthouse construction site, members stated that they had a laborer on a skip using a torch to cut out some sill support steel on the 9th floor. IUEC members were supervising the remove of the building steel. See attached picture. The members stated that the laborer was feeling ill and complained about headaches. In addition our member who was supervising the laborer stated he was also not feel well. When performing this job site visit I had a 3 M Lead Check test kit, one of my favorite tools, see attached picture. I suggested we go check the steel being torched on the 9th floor. It came back positive for the presence of lead. The IUEC MIC immediately notified Hensel Phelps safety manager and Jacobs project managers(GSA) who responded by sealing off the entire elevator hoist ways and are exhausting any fumes out the top of the hatch. Hensel Phelps and Jacobs (GSA) are now investigating all the steel used on this project for the presence of lead content. I submitted pictures to our MIC to forward to the contractor to verify the test kit I used. I will forward any further information I receive concerning this issue. This happened because IUEC members took action to safe guard their own health and welfare and also of their fellow trades persons.
